Important NPS Public Meetings Coming Up

NPS Announces General Management Plan Public Meetings

The National Park Service at the Valles Caldera rolls out their all-important General Management Plan this spring. The document will lay the legal groundwork for all the programs at the Valles Caldera for years to come.

It will form the basis of trail systems, access rules, education programs, livestock programs, endangered species protections, fire management and all other activities that take place at a National Preserve. It will be in place as managers change over the years.

We urge everyone to get to know the draft GMP when it is released and give the Park Service your comments. There will be deadlines so please note those. Please share your comments with our Congressional delegation.

We are disappointed that the NPS is not planning a public meeting in Los Alamos, Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Many people from these cities visit the VCNP, volunteer there, and have been involved in the Caldera for years. Please write Superintendent Silva-Banuelos if you agree: David_Krueger@nps.gov

Here is the press release from the Valles Caldera managers:

Jemez Springs, NM – The National Park Service is excited to announce three upcoming public open house meetings to share preliminary general management plan concepts for Valles Caldera National Preserve.

For those unable to attend an in-person open house meeting, the National Park Service will host a virtual presentation starting at 5 pm on May 17.
