2/28/20 Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) recently was able to obtain $1.3 million dollars in additional annual appropriations for the Valles Caldera National Preserve. This is permanent funding. Senator Udall sits on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee.
The funding will be welcome at the Preserve where various projects are in the starting gate including road paving, trail improvements, a possible new visitor center and property acquisition for operations.

Meanwhile, Senator Martin Heinrich is working to preserve funding for the thinning and prescribed fire program on the west side of the Valles Caldera. The multi year program in collaboration with the US Forest Service called the Cooperative Forest Landscape Restoration Program is threatened by Trump administration budget cuts. A similar program has been ongoing in the Zuni Mountains near Grants , NM.
