The Valles Caldera National Preserve belongs to all Americans. Yet after 8 years of public ownership under an unusual legislative scheme which established the VCNP as a government corporation with a private sector Board of Trustees, the VCNP faces critical problems which could imperil its protection.

To date, the Board of Trustees has yet to provide the public owners of the preserve adequate quality, non-motorized access to our preserve. Few people can access the VCNP under the current system. No visitor center has been built, no ranger station exists, the historic buildings are in disrepair and the road system is inaccessible in places in wet seasons. Further the VCNP's budget is uncertain making for staff anxiety and less access for the public and students.

Now is a great time to contact Congress and ask them to:

1) Look into the shortage of public non-motorized access to the VCNP.

2) Appropriate adequate funds for law enforcement, infrastructure, and protection of this wild area for 2010.

3) Ask Congress to review the current legislation and be receptive to changes offered by the conservation community in 2009.
